The war was lost by the Boer (white descendants of the colonialists) who until then had  to independent republics, and those republics were placed under the British Empire. The war has left many Boers unsatisfied, and introduced a feeling of waiting for a future opportunity for an independence.

I think northerners would be more likely to welcome modernization because they have the mentality that if it's newer, it's better, which would lead them to be more intrigued and impressed by new inventions and innovations.
