1.  Tortuga lies on the north side of the great and renowned island of Hispaniola (modern Haiti)

2.  The island is small; some sixteen leagues in circumference and acquired its name (Ile de la Tortue, “Turtle Island”) because its shape is that of a turtle.

3.   At the beginning of the 17th century, the population lived on the southern coast of the island, where there was a port for ships to enter.
