Southern colonies were established as the first place as a barrier against Spain and as a source of profit. Only Virginia, for example, was significant for the gold and silver mines, but because of tobacco plantations. resulting in a large influx of servants. The southern colonies were mainly oriented to the cultivation of large plantations with different crops, and therefore many servants and slaves were needed.
