The following were allied military actions during WW2:
Operation Avalanche: Was the landing of troops near the port of Salerno.
Operation Torch: Was also allied troop landings, but they took place before Avalanche and were directed at Algeria and Morocco.

The countries of Europe were very divided after World War I and were in no mood to establish a world changing organization dedicated to promoting world peace and understanding. The U.S not being a european country( an outsider) may have helped fix problems as a median. But, congress was not interested in european affairs.
Limited by Congress--they all had a mixed Congress to deal with and checks and balances prevented their full reform efforts.
FDR, JFK, and LBJ were all Democrats fighting not only a conservative Republican party but also a split in their own party. The Democrats were split over civil rights issues and the 3 often had to appeal to liberals and Southern dixiecrats.
