Nikita Khrushchev was First Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party during the Cold War. He managed the de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union, including a number of radical national changes and the support of the space program.

Although Stalin had allowed few tourists in the Soviet Union and few Soviets to travel, Khrushchev permitted Soviets to travel and allowed foreigners to visit the Soviet Union. In fact, 700,000 Soviet citizens traveled abroad in 1957. The same year, Khrushchev also granted the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow.
