"Rotting and decay"

Explanation:

  • Shakespeare applies the concepts of rotting and decay continually completely in the play in many many ways, and each passing of a character relates to another death before it.
  • Decay is used in various ways throughout Hamlet, whether it be the decay of Denmark, the decay of morals or sensations, but the majority of it compared to the decay of a dead body.
  • Because the decay of a body is not reasonable unless the body is deceased, once a character dies in the play rotting or the eating of flesh is usually mentioned thereafter.
  • Without death and decay happening, there would be no Hamlet, since every other theme and approach from the play direct to the two.
