Answer:

O Pioneers! by Willa Cather

Over the course of the passage, the main focus of John Bergson's thoughts shifts from the

physical qualities of his land to the personal qualities that he values most in a potential successor.

Explanation:

In the 1913 historical fiction titled "O Pioneers!," Willa Cather chronicled the family life of John Bergson with themes that were focused on "the strength and everlasting nature of the land and the ugly, destructive nature of jealousy." John Bergson and his family were Swedish immigrants, who settled in Hanover, Nebraska.

Under the visionary leadership of Alexandra, they undertook the task of converting the raw land at Hanover into a productive farmland, thereby converting the family's misfortune of wretchedness to a life of profitable farming, comfort, and independence. As the eldest, Alexandra was entrusted by her dying father, John, with the care of the land on behalf of the Bergsons: Oscar, Lou, and Emily. She did not betray her father's trust, but valiantly delivered on her promise to make the land productive.

The author applies pathos to develop his argument. He uses emotionally charged language in order to evoke a response. Using the phrases like "destabilize and turn lethal", "if disturbed too much" and "risk catapulting ourselves into an alien environment" the author gives his message given metaphor to the whales' suicide that it is not a rational choice by ignoring the environment.

-From Frankenstein-
andrezito [222]

The strengths in the creature's argument for a female companion in "Frankenstein" lie in his reasoning that his bad actions are a result of his loneliness and misery. The creature needs a family, as all human beings.

The weaknesses in the creature's argument lie in the fact that it is asking for the creation of another monster, another being that should not exist in this world.

The creature's argument

In Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein," Dr. Victor Frankenstein creates a monster after putting together body parts from different corpses and reanimating them with electricity. However, he cannot feel any love or compassion for his own creation due to its monstrous appearance.

The creature, seeking revenge for his creator's indifference, begins to hurt people. Eventually, it asks Frankenstein to give him a female companion, explaining that it is its loneliness that causes it to kill.

The argument has strength in its logic, since it is true that we all need a companion or a family to be happy. But its weakness is in the fact that there would be two monsters in the world if Frankenstein complied.
