The Alien & Sedition Acts were laws that took power in 1798. They meant that foreigners could be deported and that new immigrants coming to America would have a harder time getting the right to vote.
Additionally, the sedition part of the act prohibited public opposing of the government that would be seen as "false, scandalous and malicious". This act resulted in the imprisonment of more than 20 newspaper editors.
