The air was cool, warmed only by a brilliant sun that stood high in the sky. The bare branches of the trees seemed lonely with t

he sudden loss of leaves. In sunny spots in the yard, the yellow, orange, and red patches of leaves were just calling the children home from school. Any minute, they would come running and laughing into the yard. Although it was still just early October, fall was coming to North Carolina.

D makes the most since over C's "high in the sky" D is the best choice here.

A - them is unnecessary in this and you would need to add “his” in order for this to work
B- His is unnecessary, “both sisters are taller” is more proper sounding
D - “the two both his sisters are taller”, the two is unnecessary, and the is unnecessary, to make this work it would be “both his sisters are taller”
