What is plate motion in an earthquake?

Along fault lines, which are crevices in the Earth's crust where tectonic plates collide, earthquakes happen. They happen when plates are clashing, spreading, subducting, or sliding. Pressure rises when the plates become trapped as they grind against one another. Finally, the plates become loose due to the intense pressure between them. The earth may tremor mildly or violently, depending on how much pressure has accumulated.

The Richter Scale is used by scientists to gauge an earthquake's intensity. It rates earthquakes from one to ten. At magnitude 3, people seldom notice an earthquake, whereas at magnitude 4, windows may tremble. A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6 can cause chimneys to collapse and houses to shake. A 9.5 magnitude earthquake was the biggest one ever recorded.
