  • Earthquakes create S and P waves. The P waves are quick and of a larger frequency than S waves.
  • P waves arrive at a point first and can go through liquid whereas S waves reach after and they lose quite a bit of their energy while passing liquid media.
  • This is on the grounds that S-waves are shear waves and require inelastic or inflexible media for transmission.

<u>EXPLANATION:</u>

  • During a quake, there is generally a shadow zone (where there isn't any destruction since S-waves didn't reach) framed right over the focal point of the quake.
  • This is because of the fact that the S-waves were not able to travel through the inner core of the liquid of the earth before arriving at the surface. Just P-waves are enlisted in this shadow zone.
  • Thus, earthquakes provide indirect evidence about the layers of Earth
