Located in the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island is a federally owned island that was formerly the busiest immigration screening and processing facility in the country. Nearly 12 million immigrants who arrived at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there in accordance with federal law between 1892 and 1954. It is now a component of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is only reachable by ferry for the general public. The main structure, which is now a national museum of immigration, is located on the northern part of the island.
