The pieces of textual
evidence from the excerpt of “The Dark Game” written by Paul B. Janeczko that support
the inference that the codebook was of high importance are third and fifth
pieces. These pieces show preventing the enemies (in this case Russians) of
finding the codebook is crucial – the captain wants to throw the book into the
sea wrapped in lead covers, and the sailor on verge of his death is still
holding thing onto the codebook.
(C) When Russian ships quickly bore down on the cruiser, the captain of the stranded ship immediately did what all naval officers were taught to do: he ordered his signalman to bring him the ship's codebook so he could throw the book, wrapped in lead covers, into the sea.
(E) When the Russians recovered his body, the sailor was still clutching the codebook in his arms.
