Differential reinforcement is used to maintain the behavior at moderate levels or for the emission of other behaviors different or incompatible with the one to be eliminated. The time out of reinforcement consists of removing the conditions of the environment that allow obtaining reinforcement, or removing the person from them, during a certain period, contingent on the emission of the maladaptive behavior. It is applicable when you want to reduce certain behaviors, but not eliminate them. Since its objective is to moderate behaviors, it can be useful for the development of self-control in behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, overeating. among others.
