During the battle of Nashville there is a need for either the Confederates or the Union to win and secure the city. This is as a result of the significance of the city to the country.

<em>After the state was won by the Union forces, they had to deployed the colored troops who helped in securing the state. Also, slaves and free born coloured people where used to establish  a fortress known as </em><em><u>Fort Negley </u></em><em>which helped in ensuring that the city does not fall into the hands of Confederates.</em>
