Read the excerpt below from the short story “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan and answer the question that follows. On a cold sprin

g afternoon, while walking home from school, I detoured through the playground at the end of our alley. I saw a group of old men, two seated across a folding table playing a game of chess, others smoking pipes, eating peanuts, and watching. I ran home and grabbed Vincent’s chess set, which was bound in a cardboard box with rubber bands. I also carefully selected two prized rolls of Life Savers. I came back to the park and approached a man who was observing the game. “Want to play?” I asked him. His face widened with surprise and he grinned as he looked at the box under my arm. “Little sister, been a long time since I play with dolls,” he said, smiling benevolently. I quickly put the box down next to him on the bench and displayed my retort. What motivates the narrator to “display [her] retort” rather than to respond verbally to the man? the goal not to speak a single negative word in thirty days the fear of what the narrator’s mother will do the knowledge that it is dangerous to speak to strangers the desire to master the art of “invisible strength”

  • Tell Sarah you are doing well and ask her how she has been doing.
  • Explain that you will soon be leaving Malaysia, but that you had a lot of fun there.
  • Tell her she can write about Malaysia's culture. List a few facts such as: The language spoken in Malaysia is called Malay, rice and coconut are typically used in dishes, and most people are Muslim in the country.

In at least 150 words, analyze Hemingway’s choice of not giving the male character a name.
babymother [125]

Answer:

Although “Hills Like White Elephants” is primarily a conversation between the American man and his girlfriend, neither of the speakers truly communicates with the other, highlighting the rift between the two. Both talk, but neither listens or understands the other’s point of view. Frustrated and placating, the American man will say almost anything to convince his girlfriend to have the operation, which, although never mentioned by name, is understood to be an abortion. He tells her he loves her, for example, and that everything between them will go back to the way it used to be. The girl, meanwhile, waffles indecisively, at one point conceding that she’ll have the abortion just to shut him up. When the man still persists, she finally begs him to “please, please, please, please, please, please” stop talking, realizing the futility of their conversation. In fact, the girl’s nickname, “Jig,” subtly indicates that the two characters merely dance around each other and the issue at hand without ever saying anything meaningful. The girl’s inability to speak Spanish with the bartender, moreover, not only illustrates her dependence on the American but also the difficulty she has expressing herself to others.

Why is a sensationalized slideshow harmful to the presenter?
lisov135 [29]
Sensationalism is the act of heightening emotion while lowering accuracy.

Although most of the article will be the same information, the presenter will eventually drop the fact that the article is not entirely accurate. It is also harmful to the presentee, as they are misled into thinking somewhat fake news.
