Is there a relationship between scapegoating and herd mentality? Explain.

English

ASHA 777 [7]3 years ago

Answer:

Scapegoating is the practice of singling out a person or group for unmerited blame and consequent negative treatment. Herd mentality describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis. So yes, in a way, there is a connection between the two simply based on their definitions.

Explanation:

Let’s use bullying as an example:

Jason and his “friends” are outside after lunch and one of his friends begins to pick on a younger, defenseless kid because they’re wearing glasses. Then, Jason and his other friends (that were not previously butting in) join the friend’s berating because Jason and his friends think it’ll make them look cool and sound intimidating, even though it is a very irrational idea.

Now, you have scapegoating. Luke singles out and tortures a kid because they’re not wearing the “most in” shoes. See the similarities?

Hope this helps!

after jack learns the truth of his birth, he excitedly embraces Miss Prism and comments double standards between men and women.
Effectus [21]

It is clear that Wilde recognized the gender qualities of his day, and often tried to show these through the characters in his plays.

In "The Importance of Being Earnest" the interactions between the characters are often about power plays. Men in Wilde's day had greater influence than women. They made the important decisions for their families, while women worked at home, taking care of the children.

The respectable Miss Prism, a governess, clearly did not represent the norm in a society where men were admired for their intelligence and women for their beauty.  As an unmarried woman in a society that centered on marriage, Miss Prism's role gave her identity and status where normally she would have had neither. But she was totally non-maternal, and horrified at the end when Jack called her "Mother." She harbored secret feelings for the parson, Dr Chasuble, but was too straight-laced to show them. The single male characters, on the other hand, had no qualms about flirting with the women they were attracted to.

Miss Prism is in some ways a comic character, but she does make a point for Wilde about the unfairness of the society of which they were a part.

*In Chapters 8 and 9, several characters in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry react to acts of intimidation or harassment by white me
likoan [24]

Cassie decides not to give in to racism and confront the person who is being racist with her. Papa, on the other hand, decides to give in to racism if it's necessary to protect his family.

We were able to arrive at this answer because:

  • Papa has a great sense of responsibility to his family.
  • He recognizes that white people have greater influence and privileges in society and that this allows them to exploit and abuse black people.
  • He doesn't want his family to suffer any kind of aggression from whites and for that reason he decides to give in to racism, acting the way the whites want so that his family doesn't suffer.
  • Cassie, however, acts differently. That's because after she suffered racism from a classmate, she decided to confront, fight and threaten the girl, in addition to demanding that the girl apologize.

The ways in which the two characters acted show different aspects of how people react to racism. However, in both situations, racism appears as a very negative element.

Importantly, "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," tells the story of a family of black farmers who need to fight racism to maintain their land and their position in society.
