Answer:

The new coordinates are 5S and 125E

Explanation:

Addition of latitudes:

If they are in the same direction, you just have to add the values.

For example, 5N + 10N = 15N.

You have to be careful that we don't have any latitude higher than 90. So, if the result of your sum is higher than 90, we subtract 180 by the result, and the position is in the other hemisphere.

For example

60N + 40N = 100N

100N is larger than 90, so not possible

Subtracting and changing hemisphere

180 - 100N = 80S

When they are in opposite directions, you can just say that one hemisphere is the positive one, and the other is the negative.

In this problem, i am going to say that the North hemisphere is the positive one and the South the negative.

So, currently at 35N moving 40S. The new position is

P = 35 - 40 = -5

Since the result is negative, this just means that we are in the Southern Hemisphere, so 5S

Adittion of Longitudes:

They work just like the latitudes, the difference is that we don't have any longitude higher than 180. So, if we have a result higher than 180, we subtract 360 by this value and change the hemisphere.

In this problem.

175W + 60W = 235, higher than 180, so:

360 - 235 = 125E

Analysis of a rock sample that it contains 6.25% of its original uranium-235. How old is the rock? How do you know?
Andrews [41]

Answer:

The age of the rock = 2800.6 million years = 2.8 billion years.

A simple method of analysis similar to Carbon dating is used to obtain the required age of the rock. Radioactive substances decay according to first order reaction kinetics. So, plugging all the required parameters into the general equation for amount of substance left in a first order decay gives us the age of the rock.

Explanation:

Half life of Uranium-235 = 700 million years (from literature)

The decay of radioactive substances follow first order reaction kinetics.

The general equation is given as

A(t) = A₀ e⁻ᵏᵗ

A(t) = Amount of radioactive substance left after a particular time = 6.25%

A₀ = initial amount of radioactive substance = 100%

t = time that has passed since the beginning = age of the rock = ?

k = decay constant

The decay constant is related to the half life (T) through the relation,

k = (In 2)/T

k = (0.693/700) = 0.00099 /million years

A(t) = A₀ e⁻ᵏᵗ

6.25 = 100 e⁻ᵏᵗ

0.0625 = e⁻ᵏᵗ

In e⁻ᵏᵗ = In 0.0625 = -2.7726

-kt = - 2.7726

t = (2.7726/0.00099) = 2800.6 million years

t = 2.8 billion years.

Hope this Helps!!!
