-The first known European navigator who managed to overtake Cape Bojador was the Portuguese sailor Gil Eanes in 1434, on his fifteenth expedition, under the auspices of Prince Henry of Portugal. The disappearance of many European ships that sailed in the area had led to myths such as the existence of marine monsters and the impossibility of passing Cape Bojador to the south.

Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada --- Henry VIII of England

-King Henry VII financed the expedition of John Cabot, looking for opportunities to trade with the islands of spices. Cabot's idea was to reach Asia by sailing west across the North Atlantic. He estimated that this route should be shorter and faster than the one newly discovered by Columbus. Finally, Cabot's expedition discovered Newfoundland and Labrador.

-Funded by the Catholic Kings of Spain, Christopher Columbus explored the area, during his first trip to America in 1492. On his arrival in Hispaniola, he founded the fort La Navidad on the north coast of present-day Haiti. Upon his return, the following year, following the destruction of the fort, Columbus quickly founded a second settlement further east, in the current Dominican Republic, La Isabela, which was the first permanent European settlement in America.
