Germany's loss of land thanks to the Treaty of Versailles was economically fatal because it limited the resources that Germany had access to. When Germany lost control of places like Rhineland and other colonies, it severely limits their ability to trade/control the economy of these colonies. This meant that Germany had fewer trade partners and little access to goods outside of mainland Germany.
