After the War of 1812, Henry Clay, an influential member of the Congress, implemented the program which consisted of protecting American manufacturers from foreign competitors and increasing the internal market. Canals were built and most importantly the National Road which was a boon to business. Farmers and traders could move goods to markets making trade easier among American cities.
