They are <span>sandstone blocks and are </span>up to 30 feet (9 meters) tall and weigh 25 tons (22.6 metric tons) on average. According the science they were brought from Marlborough Downs, a distance of 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the north. The name Sarsens comes "Saracen stones". Saracen" was a common name for Muslims<span>, and came by extension to be used for anything regarded as non-Christian, whether Muslim, pagan Celtic, or other.</span>
