He is the breadwinner of his family and considers that nothing is more important than performing that role. Throughout the play we learn that he doesn't even care if the means to achieve it involve the suffering of others. At the end, we discover that in order to make some extra money, he sold faulty pieces of a plain to the US government and that resulted in the death of one of his sons who was in combat.
