The author began to "crept aft", meaning he moved to the back of the boat, so he moved trough the passage. Then he says "till there warn't but one stateroom betwixt me and the cross-hall of the texas." Here we can see that he wants to go somewhere, or that there is an end to the passage, the end is "the cross-hall". So the narrator is in Place A., the "cross-hall" place C., and in between them is "one stateroom".
