In respect of a computer interface design, a ribbon is known as a graphical control component in the structure of a set of toolbars placed on several tabs. The common or normal structure of a ribbon includes large, tabbed toolbars, that contains graphical buttons and other graphical control elements which are grouped by functionality. Such ribbons utilize tabs to expose different sets of controls, getting rid of the need for numerous parallel toolbars.
The usage of the word "ribbon" can be dated back to the 1980s and was originally used as a substitute for plain toolbar.
