The growing sectional division in the country over the issue of slavery.

  • The Missouri Compromise (1820) admitted Missouri into the Union as a slave state with Maine being added at the same time as a free state, to keep the balance of slave and free states equal.  The Missouri Compromise also prohibited any future slave states north of the latitude line 36 1/2 degrees north of the equator in territories of the Louisiana Purchase, with the exception of Missouri (north of that line) being admitted as a slave state.
  • A couple decades later, that sectional debate was sparked still further by the acquisition of lands from Mexico after the Mexican-American War.  The Mexican Cession was the large region of land that Mexico ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.  It included territory that would later become the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of what would become Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.  The Mexican Cession reignited tension on the issue of slave-holding states vs. free states.   Since the Missouri Compromise had specified only the Louisiana Purchase lands with its  36 1/2 degrees latitude dividing line, new debate arose over whether territories in the Mexican Cession territory would be slave or free states.

Explain why Germany's location in Europe contributed to it's being involved in a two front war
taurus [48]

I presume your question is in reference to The Great War, which we now call World War I.

The days leading up to the Great War (World War I) were full of military buildup, military planning, and countries lining up with one another in alliance systems.  The Triple Entente had Britain, France and Russia as allies.  In between those countries were the members of the Triple Alliance:  Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, with Germany as the leading power in that group.

Because of the alliance system, Germany assumed that if a war began, it would need to fight on two fronts -- west and east. Germany assumed it would be fighting against both France (on its western border) and Russia (on its eastern border) if war broke out.

German Field Marshall Alfred von Schlieffen drew up war plans that said attack France first, quickly, and then hold that territory while deploying forces to contend with Russia in the east.

In 1914, when Russia mobilized troops to come to the aid of Serbia against Austria-Hungary in 1914 (after the assassination of Austria's archduke by Serbian radicals), Germany declared war on Russia.  And when Germany went to war, the first thing it did was to march through Belgium to go and attack France.  Up to that point France had not had involvement in the conflicts that had begun in the Balkans.  Thus the war spread and quickly became a more global conflict.

Difference in approach between hoover and fdr in addressing the great depression
elena55 [62]
FDR believed in a "hands on" approach to help solve the Great Depression. He favored federal government activity and the New Deal enacted laws that influenced society on a daily basis on the part of the federal government. Hoover believed in a balanced budget and not pumping government money into the economy.
