Silk was very valuable to the China, it was a symbol of wealth. Other countries would pay high prices for it. By keeping it a secret, China can make a lot of money of selling silk since the only way other countries can obtain it is by buying it from China.

It was also something special to China, if every other country could also do it, China wouldn't be unique.
