The sentence "A hospital alone shows what war is" means within hospitals you can see the reality of war - human beings suffering, bleeding, and with bodies broken into many pieces. Actually, even though there are accounts of war written all the time, and war has always existed, the author cannot believe that such torment still continues, and that there are people in hospitals fighting for their lives in pain every day as a result of war.

People who are in a hospital are fighting a war for their lives. Countries that fight are fighting at the cost of their lives. Many people find their loved ones in the morgue of the hospital.
