My heart sunk like a rock into a fright,

I gasped when I saw the sight.

Down those mountains we were to ski,

I felt inside as if I should flee.

I built up the courage and flew down the hill,

I couldn't help but think that I was on my way to the kill.

The ice going down was like a mirror,

The views had never been clearer.

As I flew down the weathered ice,

My speed did nothing but maximize.

It was an endless day in the fridged cold

Down the icy hills we strolled.

I have some ice

And it´s very very nice

I will put it in my drink

And let it melt and sink

So then it´s ice cold

And its feels like shining gold

When I take a big sip

It feels gooooooooooooood

What is Ishmael describing when he states, "…whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing
laiz [17]

With these lines, Ishmael is describing the perception of human mortality and all that it represents.

We can arrive at this answer because:

 • Ishmael is showing how the notion of mortality prevents him from doing what he feels like when he attends a funeral.
 • That's because when he stops in front of coffin warehouses or realizes he's in the back of a funeral, he recognizes how fleeting human life is.
 • This sense of recognition of his mortality shows Ishmael that one day, he will be inside the coffin.
 • This prevents him from being disrespectful and acting as he pleases at funerals, as she does not want to be disrespected on the day of his death.

In this case, the notion of mortality is presented imposingly in the lines presented above. This makes the reader understand that the concept of death will be very important in the story.

How does the air– born voice influence the speaker's thoughts in the poem?
Darya [45]

The air-born voice makes the speaker realize that he can be happy, as shown in option C.

Why is the speaker unhappy?

 • He is confused about himself.
 • He feels isolated from other people and nature.
 • He feels he doesn't have what he needs to be happy.

The air-born voice, shown at the end of the poem, establishes that the speaker can be happy, as long as it promotes a change in attitude and a change in the way he sees himself, as he has all the necessary resources.

This question is about the poem "Self-Dependence" written by Matthew Arnold.
