The disaster in "The Man in the Water" by Roger Rosenblatt occurred in 1982 when an airplane clipped a Potomac bridge during rush hour and went into the water. The heroic man in the water helped others before he drowned.

On January 13th 1982, flight 90 crashed in the 14 Street Bridge over the Potomac River during rush hour and the story bases it's narrative in the case of a man who gave his life to save others: the man on the water, which real name we don't know, and revolves around the amazing heroic actions by this character and others. The occupants of the aircraft during the tragedy were 74 passengers and 5 crew members. Only four passengers and one flight attendant survived the crash and still four more died on the bridge.
