The Hawks are South Africa's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DCPI), and they replaced the former Scorpions. The organization is designed to target organized crime, economic crime and corruption.

When established in 2008 by Zuma, there were concerns that transforming the Scorpions into the Hawks was going to cause them to be less effective. It now appears that during the period following the replacement, levels of corruption increased. This might show that the organization has not been very successful in exercising their mandate.
