Most power-generation technologies use a form of turbine to create electricity. The turbine is forced to spin because of an external force applied to its blades, and that movement against a fixed generator created electricity.
In a gas or steam plant, the gases force the movement of the turbine.
In water-based plants, it's the water pushing the blades (like in a dam).
In a wind turbine, it's the wind pushing the blades.
