The basic political unit in the United States is the state.  States - one of the 50 components of the

administrative and political units whose sovereignty is shared with the federal

government of the United States.  The

state has a unique function in the American system of government because of the

way the nation developed. Initially, at the announcement of independence of the

United States, in the new state entered 13 colonies later the first 13 US

states. Further, as a result of wars, buying and voluntary association are

attached other states.
