Green algae are photosynthetic organisms in kingdom Plantae. They have chloroplasts which contain both chlorophyll a and b which gives them green colour , unlike other algae groups which contain only chlorophyll a. They also have other accessory pigments like xanthophylls and beta carotene.

Like plants their cell wall also has cellulose and they also store sugar as starch. They are mostly found in water but sometimes can also be found in moist soil. Often they live symbiotically with other organisms. They can be both unicellular like Chlamydomonas or multicellular like Volvox.
