the reasons behind why it's sometimes "esta" instead of "es" and vice versa? This stuff:
El es de España. El es un amigo. BUT NOT: El está de España. El está un amigo.
El está aquí. BUT NOT: El es aquí.
“To be (located somewhere)” takes the “to be” verb estar.
“To be (originated from somewhere)” and “to be (a friend)” take the verb ser
