They did not need it to work the fields and they might escape if they learn to read and gain intelligence. A written paper saying you were free would allow them to gain transportation on a train and escape to Canada or Mexico .

They were not taught to read, because the slave owners do not want the slaves escaping knowing how to navigate.

zmey [24]

The correct answer is slavery

Slavery, is the social practice in which a human being acquires property rights over another called a slave, to whom this condition is imposed by force.

In some societies, since the most distant times, slaves were legitimately defined as a product. Prices changed according to physical conditions, professional skills, sex, age, origin and destination.

When we speak of slavery, it is difficult not to think of the Europeans who overcrowded the holds of their ships of men brought from Africa regardless of their wills and who were put up for sale in an inhuman and cruel manner throughout America.

“The Admiral, it is true, was blind as those who came after him, and he was so anxious to please the King that he committed irre
Elodia [21]

Answer:

In this quote, de Las Casas refers to Admiral as a criminal and oppressor.

Explanation:

The passage shows that Admiral, in his ambition to please the king, criminally oppressed the Indians, becoming a criminal, as well as an oppressor, and causing suffering to the natives in the name of a possible "admiration" of the monarch, and thus like those who came before him, he did not see that he was behaving exactly like the others, promoting nothing that would make him stand out in the eyes of the king and causing suffering in vain.
