Salem was governed by English law during  the time which ordered that if a grand jury handed up a true bill, which indicates that there is proof of misbehavior, the person would be punished  and a formal trial by jury would commerce.

In formal trial, the accused were not  entitled to lawyers but were allowed to directly ask witnesses and accusers questions. This mostly  did not work out in the favour of the  accused person because they were emotionally equipped enough to defend themselves against the accusation of witchcraft. or not educated enough to defend themselves.
