You switch it when multiplying or dividing by a negative number. THIS IS A FACT.

2 parts.....ratio is 5:3...added = 8.....so one of the parts is 5/8 of the total...5/8x....and the other part is 3/8 of the total...3/8x

the difference is 6...
5/8x - 3/8x = 6
2/8x = 6
x = 6 * 8/2
x = 48/2
x = 24

so the total length is 24
with the longest being : 5/8(24) = 15 <==
and the shortest being : 3/8(24) = 9
