Williams Shakespeare was an English poet, actor and playwright (dramatist). Shakespeare was born on the 26th of April, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. He died on the 13th of April, 1616 in England.

Williams Shakespeare was considered to have lived a fulfilled life as he is the world's greatest playwright and writer in English language.

Some Shakespearean comedy plays are; The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Taming of the Shrew, All's Well That Ends Well, As You Like It, The Tempest, The Winter's Tale, etc.

Hence, the main characteristics of a comedy include;

  • <em>It includes happy endings.</em>
  • <em>It explores theme of love.</em>

2. <u>Tragedy</u>: it contains a more serious and dramatic plot which typically involves the death of a main character (protagonist).

Some Shakespearean tragedy plays are; Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth, Titus Andronicus, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Othello, etc.

Hence, the main characteristics of a tragedy include;

  • <em>It explores themes of personal flaws and downfalls.</em>
  • <em>It evokes fear and pity from the audience.</em>

3. <u>History</u>: it's mainly focused on English monarchs and Elizebethan propaganda, glorifying her Tudor ancestors and illustrating the negative impacts of Civil war.

Some Shakespearean histories are; King John, Henry V, Henry IV, Richard II, Henry VI, etc.

Hence, the main characteristics of a history include;

  • <em>It aims to instil national pride.</em>
  • <em>It dramatizes the lives of monarchs.</em>
