Subsistence crops are grown for the direct benefit of the farmer and their family. Cash crops are grown to deliberately be sold. ... Cotton makes a poor subsistence crop because you can't eat it and it has to be processed before it's useful (ginned, spun and woven)

The way Settlers impacted Native Americas in the west was that the US Government forced them to live on land called "Reservations", which may I add wasn't the best lands. Native Americans usually hunted Bison which were their main source of food and clothes, but the US army, railroad companies, and white settlers set out to kill all bison, causing many Indian Americans to starve.
