The ghetto nouvo or Venetian ghetto was a segregated district in Venice which the government forced Jews to live in, in order to prevent them from mixing with their citizens. It was instituted in March 26, 1516.

In 1552, there were one hundred and sixty thousand inhabitants in Venice and nine hundred of them were Jews, who were merchants.

In the ghetto nouvo, segregation in the synagogues existed and there were separate synagogues for different ethnic groups of German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

The languages spoken in the ghetto nouvo include; German, French, Venetian, Italian and Judeo-spanish. So Venice had a segregation for foreigners in their city.
