NOTA CULTURAL Question 1 with 1 blankPenélope Cruz es . Question 2 with 1 blankAlfonso Cuarón es un gran director de cine; es .
erastova [34]

Answer:

1. Penélope Cruz es española.

2. Alfonso Cuarón es un gran director de cine; es mexicano.

3. Ellen Page y Avril Lavigne son canadienses.

4. Giorgio Armani es un diseñador de modas italiano.

5. Daisy Fuentes es de La Habana, Cuba; ella es cubana.

6. Emma Watson y Daniel Radcliffe son actores ingleses.

7. Heidi Klum y Michael Fassbender son alemanes.

8. Serena Williams y Michael Phelps so n estadounidenses.

Explanation:

In this exercise you should be able to tell somebody's origin. Here's how you should do it!

1. Penelope Cruz is Spanish.

Penelope Cruz is a Spanish actress. In order to define one's origin we must use the corresponding adjective: español. But we should choose the right form of the adjective and that is why we look for the gender of the person. Penelope is a woman so we choose the feminine adjective: española.

2. Alfonso Cuarón is a famous film director; he is Mexican.

The Spanish adjective for Mexican is mexicano. Alfonso is a man so we use the masculine form. The feminine form ends in -A so this gives mexicana. We can also express somebody's origin by saying they are from some country: Alfonso Cuarón es de Mexico.

3. Ellen Page and Avril Lavigne are Canadian.

There are some adjectives in Spanish that have the same form for both gender. That facilitates the choice here because canadiense is used in Spanish for both genders. But here we have two persons which implies we have to use the plural form: canadienses.

4. Giorgio Armani is an Italian fashion designer.

Italian gives italiano in Spanish. Giorgio Armani is a man and that is why we keep the masculine form in -O. The feminine form of the adjective would be italiana. If there are more than one men, we say italianos, and the feminine plural form is italianas.

5. Daisy Fuentes is from La Habana; she is Cuban.

Here's an example of another way to tell origin: the verb ser + de + country or town. If we know she comes from La Habana we should look for an adjective that means Cuban in Spanish: cubano. But we need the feminine form here, and that means we opt for cubana.

6. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe are English.

In Spanish, inglés means English. But we need its plural form ingleses because there are two persons. Don't forget to lose the accent because there is one more syllable now. We also use the masculine form whenever there are both genders. The feminine form would be inglesa.

7. Heidi Klum and Michael Fassbender are German.

Alemán is Spanish for German. Here it should be in its plural form: alemanes. The adjective again loses the accent because it receives an extra syllable at the end. The feminine form would be alemana. Don't forget that in Spanish we do not write these adjectives in capital letters!

8. Serena Williams and Michael Phelps are American.

The United States in Spanish give Los Estados Unidos. The adjective we use in Spanish also derives from it: estadounidense. It is one of those adjectives that have on form in singular, and here we must use the plural form because there are two subjects in the sentence: estadounidenses
