The reason why violence occurred in Kansas after the passage of the Kansas Nebraska act is that this act left the issue of whether or not there would be slavery in this new territory up to "popular sovereignty"--meaning that people from all over rushed into the territory to voice there opinion, which resulted in disagreements and violence.
