Immigrants coming ashore, CA. 1920.
Immigrants coming ashore,
ca. 1920.
This new generation of Italian immigrants was distinctly different in makeup from those that had come before. No longer did the immigrant population consist mostly of Northern Italian artisans and shopkeepers seeking a new market in which to ply their trades. Instead, the vast majority were farmers and laborers looking for a steady source of work—any work. There were a significant number of single men among these immigrants, and many came only to stay a short time. Within five years, between 30 and 50 percent of this generation of immigrants would return home to Italy, where they were known as ritornati.

"Most bad government has grown out of too much government."-Thomas Jefferson
finlep [7]
This quote can be understood as Jefferson's dislike for government with a strong power- a government that wants to control and regulate too much can harm the people rather than be beneficial for them. For this reason the concept of limited government was developed-a government that does not have too much power

Similarities between federalists and democratic-republicans
antoniya [11.8K]

While both parties differed on almost every topic of debate, there were a number of points that defined the conflict between them.

The Federalists were keen to maintain diplomatic ties with Great Britain, whereas the Republicans wanted to cut these ties, although they were sympathetic to France and some other European powers.Federalists thought that the national government should cede some accountability to the electorate, using the argument that frequent elections and participation hindered the ability of the state to effectively govern. Republicans, on the other hand, actively promoted and encouraged more participation at the grass-roots level.

In general, Federalist support was centered around New England, with a small minority of support in Southern states. Republicans held the most influence in the South, especially in Virginia, although some scattered support could be found in New England.
