After the breakup of the Ottoman Empire (after World War I), the mandate system could have led to resentment, instability, and the hastening development of nationalist movements due to the system requiring the mandatory powers (advanced countries) to come in and handle the affairs of the ex-Ottoman territories until they were "fit to take over themselves".

This could cause feelings of resentment and instability if the territories decide to no longer cooperate or accept foreign assistance who they may feel not have, or know, their best interests. These feelings could lead to widespread nationalist movements to reinforce the countries right to gaining independence, preserve traditional culture, and maintain rule over the native homeland.
