Why was opening up a second front in Europe so important to the allies

The Soviets wanted a second front in order to defeat Nazi Germany sooner. Stalin felt like the allies were using the Soviet forces as fodder to weaken the Nazi military. He was probably correct in some sense but the allies actually opened up 3 or 4 separate fronts on German forces.
