Receiving a viceregal commission to raise five hundred men, he proceeded in 1720 to San Antonio and then to Los Adaes (present-day Robeline, Louisiana), where he restored the abandoned presidio and missions. He also founded Presidio de los Texas, near present-day Nacogdoches, and Presidio Bahía del Espíritu Santo (now Goliad, Texas). Soon after his return to Coahuila, Aguayo resigned the governorship, citing poor health. Philip V rewarded Aguayo for his services in Texas by naming him field marshal in 1724.
