The author seems to want us to feel sorry for him. Perhaps he wants us to despise Fortunato. He always feels the need to justify his actions towards the audience.

Ok so i just found out the right answer. I know im probably really late, but at least any future people will have it! so its b and c because a colon can only correctly be used after a complete sentence and b and c are the only correct uses of a colon. also d couldnt be right because thats a semicolon not a colon and they have different rules for a semicolon.
