Read the excerpt from "The Most Dangerous Game." "I can't believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke." "Why

should I not be serious? I am speaking of hunting." "Hunting? General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder." The general laughed with entire good nature. He regarded Rainsford quizzically. "I refuse to believe that so modern and civilized a young man as you seem to be harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life. Surely your experiences in the war—" "Did not make me condone cold-blooded murder," finished Rainsford stiffly. In what way is Zaroff portrayed as Rainsford’s foil?

A foil is a character whose traits are distinct or different from another character. Rainsford's character is highlighted by its difference from Zaroff's character. Zaroof is ruthless and cruel while Rainsford is compassionate and values life. You could say that their characters are the complete opposite.

Answer:

Zaroff is portrayed as Rainsford’s foil as Zaroff has no conscience, while Rainsford does have a conscience.

Explanation:

The question is not complete since it does not provide the options to answer, here are the options:

* Zaroff has no conscience, while Rainsford does have a conscience.

* Zaroff is an enthusiastic hunter, while Rainsford is indifferent to hunting.

* Zaroff is an inconsiderate host, while Rainsford is a very good guest.

* Zaroff has little hunting experience, while Rainsford has a lot.

After this little exchange of ideas between Rainsford and Zaroff some differences come to light that will be very important for the development of the story, and it is shown that even when Rainsford had been at war he does value human life, he would never consider killing a sport and that demonstrates the value of his soul and consciousness all contrary to Zaroff.

Mazyrski [523]
I guess that that quote said by Marmee means that Meg should develop skills and qualities which are praiseworthy, such as being hardworking, honest, and generally good, which people deem to be the qualities that a decent human being should have. She also mentions that even though she may be pretty, Meg shouldn't be vain about it, and should strive to have good inner qualities besides those outward ones.
