During this era, Chris Columbus discovered and his Spanish explorers discovered the Western Hemisphere which led to new knowledge of geography and technology. The Europeans had to innovate their ships because the winds on the Atlantic Ocean were different from the monsoon winds. Because of this new discovery, the Colombian exchange started. This included trade between Europe and the Americas and trade of enslaved Africans. Africans that were transported to the Americas brought with them okra and rice. These Africans (and native Americans) were forced to labor on American plantations to raise tobacco and sugar, usually in Brazil where the land was more fit agriculture. The Brazil land was also perfect for sugarcane cultivation which the Africans were also forced to raise. Before, the main form of currency for the Europeans was gold and silver and seeing that the Americas had tons of gold and silver made them much wealthier. But after discovering how valuable sugar was in Brazil, the Portuguese made sugar their main form of currency. They were successful and eventually, the British and Spanish used sugarcane to express their wealth as well. Because the African slaves were dying very quickly due to lack of nutrition, many more Africans were captured and exchanged during the transatlantic slave trade to keep raising sugar.
